Free Dr. Seuss Crafts, Dr Seuss Activities, and Printables

Show several books by Dr. Seuss to children. Ask if anyone has read any of the books or has any of them at home. Explain that each of the books was written by the same man. Introduce his formal name (Theodor Seuss Giesel) and the name he mainly uses as an author (Dr. Seuss). Write the names on the chart paper. Place a framed photo of Dr. Seuss somewhere in the room.

Ten Apples Up On Top Preschool Activities and Resources

Dr. Seuss' Ten Apples Up On Top is a great book to use during your Dr. Seuss or Apples theme unit. Children learn to count to ten, play rhyming activities with the word "top", enjoy apple balancing reading and math activities, folder games, and learn all out apples with our apple science lessons. 

Ten Apples Up On Top Balancing Activities

Talk with children about how the animals in the book are balancing apples on their heads. Ask if they ever balanced anything on their heads. Find some pictures of people balancing or carring items on their heads. Discuss why some people from other cultures carry items on their heads. 

Hand out a pencil to each child. Let children try to balance the pencil on a finger, on the head, on the food, etc. Can they walk with the pencil on their heads?

Encourage children to balance different items on a block tower (Book, toy apple, larger blocks, toy cars, etc.)

Free Cat in the Hat Preschool Activities and Crafts

Cat in the Hat is a wonderful book to read to your preschool and kindergarten children. Here are some fun activities to try during your Cat in the Hat theme:

Cat in the Hat Rhyming
Print a Cat in the Hat picture and label with -at. Review the word family -at words together with the children. Print hat pictures and label some hats with words in the -at word family (cat, hat, bat, rat, sat, etc.) Write some other CVC words on the remaining hats (bag, rug, dog, pig, bus) Let children find and place the hats that rhyme with cat on the Cat in the Hat picture.

Silly Hat Day

How do you wear your hat today?
Let children bring a funny or special hat to school. Let each child show and describe their hat to the group.

Say the following rhyme together with children:

"Hey there how do you wear your hat today?" Choose one child to show the group how he/she wears the hat. Let all other children copy it and recite the rest of the rhyme together:

"I wear my hat, yes, I wear my hat, hat, in this hatty way."

Hat Movement and Gross Motor Skills Activity
Ask children: "Can you wear the hat on your head? Can you balance your hat on your hand? . . . on your foot? Can you jump up and down wearing your hat? Can you hold your hat under your chin? If you think you can, shout, "I can wear my hat like that!"

Dramatic Play Area: Dress-Up Hats 
You need a variety of hats, a child-size hat rack or a trunk, and a life-size unbreakable mirror or several small unbreakable mirrors.

Silly Hats
Make a Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Hat. Encourage them to make their own silly hats from newspaper or paper bags, decorating them with ribbon, sequins, yarn, paint, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, puff balls, glitter, crepe paper, etc.

Place hats in an area of the room where children can try them on and participate in dramatic play while wearing the different hats. Let them view themselves in a mirror. Give children opportunities at circle times to wear and share their favorite hats.

Cat in the Hat Stick Puppet Craft

What you need:

Jumbo craft stick
Cat face printouts
Glue
Red and black marker
Bowtie pasta
Red food coloring
Rubbing alcohol
Zip-Lock bag

What you do:

Preparation: Add some red food coloring and a couple drops of rubbing alcohol to a zip-lock bag. Add the bowtie pasta and seal the bag. Move the pasta around until it is covered with red color. Pour pasta on a cookie sheet covered with wax paper. Let dry.

Preschool Activities:

1. Print Cat Face printable and cut out the cat face.

2. With a black marker draw the cat's eyes, nose, and mouth.

3. Glue the cat face on the craft stick leaving the top free for the hat.

4. With a red marker draw stripes on the hat part.

5. Glue red bowtie pasta below the cat's face.
