Fit headband around child’s head, staple ends together, and cut off excess paper.
The craft idea for the sponge bow tie came from maestragemma.com. We adapted it to fit our Cat in the Hat costume.
What you need:
Sponge with no backing
Red craft paper
White craft paper
Paper roll
Glue
Stapler
Elastic band or yarn
What you do:
Cut a 1-inch wide piece off the paper roll. Cut two 1-inch wide strips from red craft paper. Cut one strip from white craft paper that is a little larger than the red strips. Let children cut the white craft paper into strips (great scissors skill activity).
Glue the white strips in a red and white pattern on the red strip.
With scissors cut off the overlapping paper. Make a cut to the paper roll.
Glue strip on the paper roll and cut off excess paper. Overlap paper roll and staple together. Glue red and white strips together at the top (see pic below).
Staple the strips to the back of the paper roll.
Staple an elastic band or length of yarn to the back of the bow tie. Voila! You just made yourself a Cat in the Hat bow tie.
