Snowman Intro Lesson

Snowman Intro Lesson

Snowman theme intro preschool lesson plan

What you need:

Snowman picture book (Book suggestion: Snowmen at Night*)
A large sheet of white paper or board
Markers or crayons
Pre-cut circles of various sizes (for snowman building)
Cotton rounds, felt, tiny buttons, craft glue, and other craft materials
A carrot and small sticks (optional, for physical snowman activity or sensory exploration)
Glue
Scissors

Objective:
Introduce children to the snowman theme, sparking creativity and engaging them in hands-on and imaginative activities that develop motor skills, language, and social interaction.

Lesson Outline:

Welcome and Circle Time (10 minutes)
Greeting: “Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re going to talk about something fun and snowy—

Riddle:

I'm round and white,
With a carrot in sight.
I melt away when the sun shines bright.
I wear a scarf and a hat so neat,
And have two stick arms, but no feet.

Who am I?

A snowmen!”

Storytime:

  • Read a snowman-themed picture book aloud. Pause occasionally to ask questions like:
“Why do you think snowmen like Winter?”
“What would you use to make a snowman?”

Discussion: What is a Snowman? (5 minutes)

  • Show a picture of a snowman or point to one in the book.
  • Ask open-ended questions to spark curiosity:
"Have you ever seen a snowman?"
"What do you think snowmen are made of?"
"What happens to a snowman when it gets warm?"

Draw a simple snowman on the board as the children contribute ideas (e.g., three circles for the body, a carrot nose, buttons, etc.).

Hands-On Activity: Build a Felt Snowman (10 minutes)
Objective: Teach the concept of assembling parts of a snowman while encouraging fine motor skills.

  • Use a felt board and felt snowman pieces.
  • Let the children take turns "building" the snowman by placing circles, buttons, a scarf, and arms on the board.
  • Discuss each part as they add it:
"This is the snowman's hat! What color is it?"
"Where do we put the snowman's nose?"

Hands-On Craft: Create a Snowman (15 minutes)

Snowman Song and Movement Activity (5 minutes)
Objective: Wrap up with an engaging and active snowman song.

Sing and act out:
“I’m a Little Snowman” (Tune: I’m a Little Teapot)
“I’m a little snowman, round and fat,
Here are my buttons, here is my hat.
When the sun comes out, I cannot stay,
I just slowly melt away!”

Encourage the children to crouch down and "melt" to the ground during the last line.
