The Mitten Story Re-telling Activity and Song
Print out the Mitten Animals printable and cut out. Laminate for extra strength.
Let children put the animals (crawl in) in the mitten as you re-read or retell the story or sing the following song:
The Mitten
(Tune: The Farmer in the Dell)
Author Unknown
The mitten on the ground,
The mitten on the ground,
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside,
The mitten on the ground.
The (mole) snuggles in,
The (mole) snuggles in,
Heigh-ho! It's cold outside,
The (mole) snuggles in.
(After the last animal, all pretend to sneeze and fall out of the mitten.)
Mittens and Animals Measurement and Oral Language Activity
Skill: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common. For example, directly compare the size of two mittens and describe one mitten as larger/smaller.
Print mitten and animal patterns and cut out. Let children color their mittens and animals. Color version available inside our KidsSoup Resource Library.
Comparing Sizes
Let children choose two mittens. Let them compare the mittens. Encourge children to use language such as, "The red mitten is larger then the blue mitten." The blue mitten is smaller."
Mittens and Animals Matching Activity
Have children match the animals with the correct size mitten.
Mittens and Animals Sequencing Activity
Let children place the animals and mitten in order from the largest to the smallest.

Hanging Mittens Fine Motor Skills Activity
Place a variety of mittens inside a basket. Attach a line between two chairs or corner of a room. Let children use clothespins to clip the mittens on the drying line.
Estimating and Fine Motor Skills
Have children estimate how many toy animals can fit into a mitten. Record their responses and then discuss their findings.
Mitten Circle Game (available inside our KidsSoup Resource Library)
Children sing the song as one child is going around the circle. At the end of the song the child drops a mitten behind one of the other children standing in a circle and taps him/her on the shoulder. The child then must pick up the mitten and run around the circle after the child and try to tag, or catch, the child before he or she gets to the vacant place in the circle.
