Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight? Story Time
What you need:
Reindeer headband
Book: Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer or Who will Guide my Sleigh Tonight? by Jerry Pallotta (Amazon Affiliate Links)
Preparation:
Make or buy a reindeer headband (Amazon Affiliate Link)
Large Group
Opening Activity for the book Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer
Show children the book cover. Ask children if they know the story and what animal rudolph is. Did they ever see a reindeer? Do they think reindeers are real or made up? What color noses do they think reindeers have? Show children a picture of a reindeer. Then read the story.
After reading the story talk about how Rudolph felt when all the other reindeers laughed at him and didn't let him play.
Opening Activity for the book Who will Guide my Sleigh Tonight?
Show children the book cover. Let children describe what they see. Read the title and ask children what they think the book is about. Show children pictures of animals from the book and ask them to hypothesize how each one might pull Santa’s sleigh. Vote on which animal they would choose to pull a sleigh, and then read the book.
Music and Movement:
Sing the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". Let children move in place and make the matching movements together. Invite children to act-out the story.
Transition Activity:
Hand the reindeer headband to one child. Play some Christmas music while the child leads the others in a parade around the room.
Tap each child on the shoulder to send them to a center.
