Snowman Letters

Snowman Letters

Snowman Letter recognition preschool game

What you need:

Snowman Letter Cards (uppercase letters)
Snowman Letters Tracing printables (one set with uppercase letters, one set with lowercase letters)
Dry-erase markers (if laminated cards are used) or colored pencils
A small basket or container for holding the Snowman Letter Cards

Learning Skills and Standards:

Children will enhance their letter recognition skills by identifying uppercase letters, and they will develop fine motor skills by tracing the corresponding uppercase or lowercase letters.

Preparations:
Print the Snowman Letter Cards and Snowman Letters Tracing printables. Cut out the cards and laminate the Snowman Letters Tracing printouts if desired.

What you do:

Introduction (5 minutes):

  • Gather the children in a circle.
  • Show them an example Snowman Letter Card and explain:
“These snowman cards have uppercase letters on them. You will pick a card, name the letter, and then trace the matching letter on the snowman letter sheet.”
  • Hold up an uppercase letter card, name the letter aloud, and demonstrate tracing it on one of the tracing cards.

Game Time (10–15 minutes):

Choose if you want to work on uppercase letters or matching letters.

  • Step 1: Place the Snowman Letter Cards (uppercase) in the basket.
  • Step 2: Invite each child to pick one card at a time.
Ask: “What letter is this?” Encourage them to say the name of the letter.
  • Step 3: The child finds the corresponding letter on a tracing card. They can choose between uppercase and lowercase tracing sheets.
  • Step 4: The child traces the letter with a dry-erase marker or colored pencil.
  • Repeat until all children have had a turn or time allows.

Optional Challenge: For advanced learners, ask the children to also say the sound of the letter or name a word that starts with the letter they picked.

Individual Play:

Place the snowman cards face down in a stack. The child selects a card, identifies the letter, and then finds and traces the matching letter on the Snowman Letters sheet.

Assessment:

  • Observe the children to ensure they can identify the uppercase letters correctly.
  • Check their tracing for proper form and directionality of the letters.
  • Listen to their verbal responses to assess their confidence and understanding of letter names and sounds.
Patterns:
