My Groovy Shoes Craft and Book

Children of all ages--from preschool to kindergarten--will "get into the groove" as they have fun making and decorating a pair of "groovy" looking shoes which they can wear, practice lacing, and/or contribute to a class book.

Preschool and Kindergarten Shoe Craft and Activity

Grade, Age Range or Specialized Learner: Multi-age, Preschool/Pre-K, 3-5 year olds
Target Learning Skill(s): Craft – Fine Motor – Tying Shoes

What you need:
12" x 18" sheet of construction paper (cut in half lengthwise)
Scissors
Single hole punch
Adult-sized shoestrings or yarn
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Stickers or other decorating materials

What you do:
To begin this activity you will need to make a set of groovy shoes for each child. Another option is to let children cut out their own set of shoes.

To make a shoe fold a 6" x 18" piece of construction paper in half.

Preschool Activities:

Draw a shoe outline on the folded paper as pictured below.

Preschool Activities:

Cut along the line and punch a series of holes along the curved edge. You can reinforce the area with clear tape before punching the holes if you are worried about the holes ripping. Heavyweight construction paper will hold up without the reinforcement.

Preschool Activities:

Give each child a set of shoes and writing implements to decorate them.

Preschool Activities:

After the shoes are decorated, it is time to begin lacing!

Our Groovy Shoes Classroom Book

Print the KidsSoup blank shoes printable and cut out a set of shoes for each child or let children cut out the shoes.

Give each child one shoe on which to write or stamp his/her name. Then, let children color their shoe.

Preschool Activities:

Take a picture of the shoes the child is wearing and print it out. Take the second shoe and attach the picture of the child’s school shoes.

Preschool Activities:

Once you have both sets of shoes, staple them together and place them inside the Our Groovy Shoes Class Book cover and staple all booklets together.

The children will have a great time guessing which pair of shoes belongs to each of their friends.

Dancing with Our Groovy Shoes

If you would like your class to be able to wear their groovy shoes, then you will need to help them wrap their paper shoe around the back of their real shoe and begin the lacing process. This works best by having children remove their shoe and placing it on top of the table or other work surface. Do not try to lace the paper shoes without a real shoe to help shape it. A pre-laced paper shoe is extremely difficult to fit over a real shoe, and your paper shoe will likely rip.

Preschool Activities:

Turn on some fun music for children to try out their new Pete the Cat groovy shoes.
