If You Take a Mouse to School Activities

With the help of the little mouse children will have fun to learn about school materials, explore their classroom and school.

School room:- Turn your your dramatic play area in to a school room. Provide school supplies and a board for the children to conduct their own classroom.

Fine Motor Skills:

School Supply Lacing Cards – Make simple lacing cards using pictures of school supplies from your classroom. Laminate the pictures and punch holes around the edges.

Gross Motor Skills:

Playground Exploration – Tape a picture of the mouse on different places on the playground. Gather children together and give clues to an item where the mouse went to play. When they think they know which part you are describing they will run to it.  Ex: “I am something that is tall, green, and twisty.” (Curly Slide) Children look around for the mouse and try out all the elements.

Creating Maps - Room Orientation - Spatial Skill (Printables and lesson plan available inside our KidsSoup Resource Library)

Together create a simple map of your classroom or school with amiliar places. Hide mouse printables all around the room in different places. Next, ask children to find and use these maps to find a hidden mouse using words that describe the location and position relative to other objects in the room, such as above, next to, below, behind, and between. Encourage your children to use these words to describe where the mouse was hidding.

Circle Story Map- Place the If You Take… book at the table along with the Circle Story Map printables.  Each child will color and cut out the parts of the story.  Then they will place them in the correct order in the map.  You can start them on the right path by telling them which piece to use to begin. They can also use the book to help them remember what order to place the pictures. (Lesson plan and printables available inside our KidsSoup Resource Library)

Tell-a-story - Gather a small group. First, each child or pair to chooses a picture. Begin by putting a card on the ground or table and open the story with e.g. “Once I took a little mouse to school (place the picture of the school on the table.) Next, invide a child to place his cards behind the school card and tell something about it.  While going round a circle gives children time to prepare their story contribution or let choose when to add their card – random turn taking. Help children to add a sentence with the words “first-then-next.” This activity will take several attempts for children to develop the skill of adding a sentence with ease, regardless of the age of the class.

Getting Know Your School with the Mouse - Welcome your class to school on their first day with a day themed around If You Take a Mouse to School. You can spend the day exploring your building and classroom to help the children feel more comfortable in their new environment.  If you have a class of returning students, they can have fun seeing what has changed around school.
